Thanks to online casinos, students can now play all the exciting casino games they would otherwise never be able to play, since they don't visit brick and mortar casinos. They can bet as much as they want in online casinos, using their credit cards, in many cases adding up to thousands of dollars a month. Just like Hogan's case, many students turn eventually to criminal activities in trying to pay of their online casinos debts. According to an online service, that tracks online poker all over the world; over 1.8 million people play poker in online casinos each month, betting an average amount of 200 million dollars a day. A large part of these poker players are students who are playing from their university campuses. Looney states that gambling in online casinos is like an epidemic at colleges and universities. The Council on Compulsive Gambling in New Jersey made a description of the average gambler addicted to online casinos. They say that about 90 percent of college gamblers are male. Characteristics are competitive, high-energy level and intelligent (students with good grades). The students with a high-risk level for online casinos addiction are usually popular with their peers, have a special talent for math (useful when they are playing poker in online casinos) and have a part-time job. The story of Hogan has drawn a national spotlight on the problem of online casinos, triggering many news shows and on-air interviews covering this subject like Good Morning America, the Oprah Winfrey Show and the Today Show. The Council on Compulsive Gambling gets more than 20,000 calls a year, including 4,000 calls from addicts of online casinos. More than 80 percent of those online addicts admit that they have committed crimes to fund their gambling habit. About 78 percent of the gamblers said that they had such overwhelming debts that they considered suicide as a way out of their problems. |
